Math Match-up!

I saw THIS idea on pinterest and changed it a little bit to create this math center! I'm loving math centers for the end of the year! A lot of them will make great fast finisher ativites for students next year as well! Have a great weekend! Katrina

Money Memory Game

The year is coming to an end. Math testing is over, but math must go on! You can never get too much practice, so for math tomorrow we are going to do math centers with games and activities to reinforce some of the basic math concepts we have worked with this year! Rainbow of Rhyming Words!

We have been working on poetry the past couple weeks. My kids have been doing well and working hard. They have also worked hard at reviewing for the end of the year tests. I figured that for writing today we might do something that they might have a little fun with : ) It still had to do with poetry, and it made them think about some of the different spelling patterns we have done this year. I also tied it in with simple sentences and had them pick two words from each row on their rainbow and write a simple sentence making sure they used the two words and had a subject and verb. Enjoy!

Popsicle Inspired Center

Well, the weather has gotten warmer (at least for a couple of days)and when it is warm outside I love to eat popsicles! My kids loved it too last week when they earned their mystery motivator, a popsicle party. Best part is that it only cost me $2.50 : ) With popsicles on the mind I came up with a fun center for my kids to do this week.

I made some paper popsicles with prefixes, suffixes, and root words on them. I then got three cups and wrote prefix, suffix, and root word on them. Students have to sort the popsicles into the appropriate cups and then have to use this recording sheet to make six words using any combination of prefix, suffix, and root word. The kids who did this center today enjoyed it! Hope you do too! Have a good one! Katrina

Math Facts Race!

Spring Break is a fabulous thing! I hope that everyone either had or is having a wonderful break!

My team and I have found that this group of second graders are very competitive! I came up with this game (using water bottle caps of course) that my competitive kids will love! Students will use a timer, they will set the timer for one minute or two minutes and see how many math facts they can find and record during that time. They can race against a friend or just race against themselves trying to get more math facts in a smaller amount of time. They can do addition or subtraction! Another way to do it would be to use a stopwatch and have students see how long it takes them to come up with the 30 facts and then see if they can beat their own score over time. This would work great as a fast finisher for high students or as extra math practice for those students who struggle. All the students in between will love it too!

Plastic Egg Word Work

With so many plastic eggs around, why not use some to make learning a little more fun?
This could work as a fast finisher or as a word work center for this week.

Each Egg has a different set of letters in it so that the students can do the activity multiple times. Have them see how many words they can make and record them!

Trash or Treasure?

Water bottle caps are definitely treasure! Save them and have your students save them too!

I have seen some different bottle cap activities floating around, but here is one that I made for my students to do during centers this week.



Contractions! This is a picture of one set (I made three different sets each with different contractions so that the students can do the activity up to three different times). Just write the contraction on one bottle cap and then the two words that make the contraction (each on their own bottle cap). Students grab a bag of bottle caps and match the contractions with the two words that make the contraction!

You could do something similar with pieces of paper laminated for durability, but bottle caps are very durable and you can probably round them up for free : )

Most people see trash, a teacher sees treasure!

Christmas Time!

It is so fun to get to spend most of December with kids who are excited about Christmas, well most days it is fun. Some days they are a little too excited for Christmas and then teaching becomes a slightly difficult task.

This week we have been writing about what we would do if Santa got stuck in or chimney. I am so proud of my students! They have om up with some great stories! I wanted to share some of them with you - just stop reading if you get bored : )

On a dark Christmas night, I saw a crumb on the floor. I thought cookie crumbs, maybe my brother got hungry so he ate Santa's cookies again. A trail of crumbs, i followed the cookie crumb trail. Santa was eating cookies stuck in my chimney. I turned on my fire place. Santa burst out of my chimney, but he fell right back in my chimney. I said "Santa, do you wear jeans?" Santa stayed quiet. I put very cold water in my water gun I found under my Christmas tree that Santa gave me. I shot the water to Santa, but that just made him madder. Santa said "are you on the naughty list?" I said "I don't know am I?" Santa said "help me" I said "why did you come here in the first place, a elf can fit through my chimney". Santa whispered "yep he's on the naughty list." I got a smile on y face. I tied a sewing string onto Rudolph the ed nosed reindeer and tied the other end onto Santa's big black boot. Rudolph the red nose reindeer yanked. Santa popped out of my chimney. I yelled out "merry Christmas Santa Clause." The sewing string ripped, Santa fell into my neighbors house and got stuck. Santa said "not again!"

I couldn't believe m eyes Santa was stuck in my chimney. I climbed to the roof and took apart the chimney and while he was getting out I was riding reindeer. And they took me for a ride around town and when we came back Santa was gone and we went inside and he was eatig all the cookies. I went back to bed and the next day it was Christmas and mom and dad said where is our chimney and I said it's a long story and I went to the Christmas tree and I saw Santa behind the tree and he said Ho Ho Ho. Mom and dad said what was that? I said nothing and he gave me a football and a nintendo dsi and a big tv and I went outside and made a snow santa.

I did fix some spelling as I was typing these, but aren't these great!!!
