Totem Poles!

Save your shoe boxes and have your friends save theirs too! Or you could have a family member buy a shoe store (that’s what I did; my parents own a Foot Solutions store). Today (the day before Thanksgiving break) we made totem poles with shoe boxes and my students loved it!!! We have six table groups in my classroom, so each table group created a totem pole with four boxes. I gave each group four shoe boxes and a big sheet of brown paper, I put out glue, tape, and colored paper and told them to cover the boxes in the brown paper and create their totem poles. Some of my favorite teaching moments are when I get to see my students working together and engaged. It was great to watch the students work in their table groups. They had to do some problem solving as to how to cover the boxes and collaborating about what they wanted their totem pole to look like. It was great to see them thinking hard and working together! The final products are great! I was so proud of their work! These will be a great decoration in our classroom for a little while. I don’t know how I will part with them. The kids all said that they wanted to take them home. I will probably let them choose someone from their group to take it home in a few weeks. Sorry parents.

Happy Thanksgiving!
